Month #2

Genevieve is 2 months old and growing fast. She is a very smiley, easy-going baby and brings joy to our family every time we look at her. For her age, she is amazingly good at holding her head up and has already been able to flip from front to back for weeks now.  She's also able get her knees up under her belly during tummy time and move her legs in a crawling motion...trying to get away from her brothers no doubt.

The boys continue to love their baby sister, yelling "baby wake!" and running down the hall toward her bed when we hear her first cries in the morning, laying large, aggressive kisses on her head throughout the day (poor kid, she constantly looks like she's been slimed), and talking to her in that high-pitched voice that only dogs and babies can hear while holding their face only an inch or so from hers. She tenses up every time they come near her for fear of what is to come, but I'm sure that will pass..... in another 20 years or so.... right?

Zak

We had the pleasure of meeting Zak and his mom, Christina, at Silverwood Park last week. This little guy made our job too easy. He was so smiley and cooperative (as long as we didn't expect him to sit still - he's a boy on the move!). He is absolutely gorgeous and we had a great time playing with him!

Miho and Gregory

At the wedding I photographed at St. Mary's Orthodox Cathedral in July, Miho approached me and asked me about my photography.  I told her that I work with Wink Photography and Gretchen and, on the side, have started learning photography as a hobby.  I explained that I was a novice looking for some practice.  To my delight, she told me she was interested in having some portraits done with her husband.  Sadly, they did not get photos taken on their wedding day, but now, wanted to have some nice photos of themselves. 

To my surprise, Miho and Gregory showed up at Nicollet Island Pavilion dressed in full wedding attire!  It was a beautiful evening, with such magical light.  We had so much fun reliving their wedding day and capturing their love!  They were the perfect couple to help with our August Inspiration Session - a session where I could get some "in the field" training with Gretchen.  Thanks Miho and Gregory for being such lovely models!

Hannah & Sophia

It was the perfect night for a family barbecue and the light was gorgeous, so I grabbed my camera and headed outside to romp around with the kids while the food was cooking. I had a great time playing with my beautiful nieces, Hannah (4) and Sophia (1). What sweet, adorable little ladies...

Mid-Summer Vacation

There is nothing like a trip to the cabin.  We anticipate the trip all year long.  A two hour drive to central Minnesota, in the middle of farming country, sits a small, hidden, humble lake.  Horseshoe Lake.  Nothing special, but it’s where memories are created.

Like the time we found a very lovable cat on the side of the road.  We took it home and named him Orion.

Like the time I sat on the dock sketching while Alex’s cousin, Michael, strummed on the guitar.

Like the time my brother-in-law caught a fish, but didn’t want to pick it up and instead, gently guided the fish with his foot back to the water.

Like the time my daughter caught her first fish using her little kid fishing pole and a kernel of corn.

Like the game of extreme bocce ball we played with Alex’s uncle.

But above else, it’s the family I treasure.   Relaxing and spending time with each other, without any distractions, other than the mosquitoes.  They are what make this trip special.

Going to the Chapel....

When given an opportunity to practice photography, I am always happy to jump at it, especially when it is for a friend.  I was recently given the honor of photographing Paul and Shelby’s wedding at St. Mary’s Orthodox Cathedral in NE Minneapolis.    

For those of you not familiar with the Orthodox faith, it is an amazingly beautiful ceremony steeped in tradition and symbolism, one that I am proud to say I participated in during my own wedding nine years ago. 

The wedding began at the center of the church (after the procession of the wedding party) where the rings are blessed.  The priest made the sign of the cross while holding the rings and then touched the rings to the Shelby and Paul’s forehead three times.  Then the rings were placed gently on their fingers and their Starosta, usually a godparent or an important elder in the couple’s life, exchanged the rings between the Paul and Shelby three times.

The crowning (in my opinion) was one of the main highlights of their wedding.  The priest made the sign of the cross with the crowns (three times for each crown) and handed the crown to two of Paul’s godsons.  They held the crown over the bride and groom for a long period of the ceremony, representing the royalty of marriage.

Another one of my favorite parts of the wedding was when the priest led Paul and Shelby three times around the Tetrapod (a small table that displays candles, wedding flowers, holds the crowns when not being used and most importantly, an icon, bible and cross.)  The “ritual dance” represented the dance around the Ark of the Covenant.  It is in this small procession that Paul and Shelby took their first steps as a married couple. 

What an honor to be a part of Paul and Shelby’s day and this beautiful ceremony.  It was so inspiring to see the love and happiness between them.  It is a great testament that love can find us at any age.
