Sunshine ahead!

Even on days when it doesn’t look so pleasant outside, the girls and I need to get out of the house and get some fresh air.  We make fun, no matter the weather.  One day it may be climbing trees, coloring the sidewalk or riding bikes.  On this particular day it was hiding under umbrellas as rain drizzled around us.

Although it was a dark, dreary, wet day, there was still vibrancy and color to be had.  And isn’t that true about life in general?  Even at our lowest and darkest, there will always be joy and laughter to be found.

Brighter and warmer days ahead.  Did I hear 80 degrees expected this weekend?  Enjoy it!

Inspiration Sessions

At Wink, we LOVE what we do and we are always trying to do it better. We keep up with the industry by reading, attending workshops, analyzing other artists’ work, practicing, and trying new things. In this spirit, we are dedicating ourselves to doing what we are calling “Inspiration Sessions” once a month. These are meant to be fun sessions that challenge our skills and creativity while providing one-of-a-kind experiences for our clients/models.
While we are using this as a professional development tool (and basically an excuse to play around with our cameras), the good news for everyone else is that we will be posting our plans for upcoming Inspiration Sessions and offering them to interested new or existing clients at substantial discounts. Each month will have a different theme and will therefore require different types of groups or models. Keep an eye out for one that might work for you and contact us asap if you are interested in participating. Here are the Inspiration Sessions that are coming up:

March - Smash Cake Session
Celebrate baby’s 1st birthday with a fun, unique photo session. We will conduct a full session, including family and individual portraits and end the session by letting the birthday boy/girl dig into a full-sized birthday cake. We provide props, birthday cake, balloons, and clean-up supplies for this entertaining (and messy) session.
BOOKED
April - Boudoir Session
This full-day boudoir session is meant to pamper and empower. It is open for a group of 3-5 women who are interested in creating some beautiful, sensual images. Hair and makeup services will be included and snacks/beverages will be provided. Each participant will be photographed in various set-ups/backgrounds throughout the session and will receive their choice of digital files or a proof book of their final images.
BOOKED

May - Mother’s Day Photo/Video Session
The Ultimate Mother’s Day gift! This is a secret session in which Dad brings the children in for a photo/video session to surprise mom this Mother’s Day. We are looking for a family with 2-4 children, ages 3-10 years old. We will conduct a simultaneous photography and videography session. The final product of this session will be group and individual images of each child and a professionally shot and edited 2-minute video, containing video footage, short interviews, and still photos. The client will receive a complimentary copy of the video and a 5x7 print of their choice to present to Mom this Mother’s Day.
Contact info@winkphotomn.com  for more details or to sign up.
We are extremely excited to shoot these sessions and offer them to our clients. We can't wait to share them with you!

Portraits of Us

Wink Photography is all about preserving family memories. I mean, really, what is more important than your family? That is why we are delighted to be working with the Minnesota Historical Society and Hennepin county libraries to bring you “Portraits of Us”, an event to celebrate family, heritage, and community.
Four Hennepin county libraries will be offering this event over the next month and a half, starting this Saturday (see dates and locations below). Participating libraries will have a preservation expert on hand to offer help and advice on preserving family heirlooms and/or a family tree craft activity will be available.
Wink Photography will be shooting professional portraits of families with on-the-spot printing. Families and patrons can bring one print home and one print will remain at the library for a community album. Contact libraries for photo sign-ups prior to the event date. This is a free event, so stop on by. We’d love to see you and photograph your family!

Dancing for the Arts

Love “Dancing with the Stars”? Looking for something different to do on a date night than the same old dinner-and-a-movie routine? I’ve got just the thing - Rochester’s own “Dancing for the Arts” fundraiser on Saturday, April 14th.
This event is put on by the Rochester Art Council and Dahl Dance Center in Rochester, MN. It promises to be an amazing night of food, live music, and (of course) lots of spectacular dancing by local Rochester celebrities teamed up with professional ballroom dancers (including my lovely and talented sister, Amanda Ruggeri). This is an incredible reasonable priced event and proceeds go to arts education (and, for those of you who live in the metro area - Rochester is a reasonable 1.25 hour drive away).
For more information, or to purchase tickets, visit http://www.rochestermnarts.com/events/dfta/index.html
I hope to see you there!

Resolution

I’ve lost some motivation.  Or have I?  Maybe it was just misplaced.  No, that’s not it either.  It’s just that life has been getting in the way of my creativity.

Between my husband and I, there are, what seems like, more than a dozen jobs to report to.  On top of which, there are all the household chores.  Oh, and we have two young children we are raising.  Yes, life is busy.

But, at the beginning of March, my family suffered a blow.

My grandma, who was just returning home from Florida with my grandpa, stumbled in the airport.  The medics were called as a precautionary measure.  Her blood pressure was too high and so she was sent to a St. Paul hospital.   Of course, my grandmother, who refuses all medical advice, couldn’t understand why she needed to be rushed off in an ambulance when she felt “fine”.

The next morning I decided to visit her and bring her a crossword puzzle book and a magazine.  Lord knows she would be dying to get out of that room!  But, when I arrived, I found her slurring, confused, and without strength in the left side of her body.

I was stunned at her condition.

Over the next couple of days, I visited the hospital 2-3 times a day, often dragging the girls along with me, so that I could spend as much time with my grandma as possible.  It was during the drives to and from the hospital (a good 20 minute ride) that I reflected on my grandmother’s life, and well, life in general.

My thoughts ran the gamut.  Things that sounded like New Year’s resolutions “I should exercise more” and “I need to stop and smell the roses”.  Things that sounded like a scrapbook “My grandmother taught me how to bake” and “I will never forget that camping trip with Grandma”.  Political stuff too, “Nobody shouldn be denied care because they can’t afford it” and “The medical community needs to incorporate other natural and holistic practices.”  (It has been a bit of an emotional roller coaster in my head.)

In the end, this was my final, prevailing thought: “I need to take more photographs and more videos.”

I want the legacy of my family to live on for decades.   I want future generations to be able to see and know their ancestors.  I want my children to know where they get their stubbornness, the shape of their eyes, their interest in the outdoors, the love of peanut butter.

I have these grandiose plans of recording my grandparents’ stories and then creating this beautiful DVD for my family, but I never feel like I have the time, the organization, or the motivation to start.   However, now I feel like I have ever more reason, and a shorter deadline, to make this happen.

Our lives are precious and I want my family to understand how precious their lives are to me.

~sarah

During my grandmother’s stay at the hospital, and after many, many tests, it was discovered that she had some “tight” arteries in her brain and some of the blood vessels in her brain were inflamed.  She has since been moved to a Duluth hospital’s rehab unit and undergoes physical and occupational therapy for multiple hours a day.  She has been working hard and has made some progress, but still has a ways to go.  I am so grateful to all my friends and family who have showed their support through prayers, thoughts, kind words and babysitting.  Thank you, thank you, thank you!

Photo Geek

Attending professional photography workshops and seminars is an essential part of learning and exercising my craft. Besides, it is FUN!! There is always so much to learn and try that I come away from it giddy with excitement. I literally couldn’t sleep last night because I was so wound up (does that make me a total photo geek or what?).

I have attended a handful of seminars in the last few months and gleaned as much information as possible (photos below are from one such workshop) and I can’t wait to try some new things out!  I am especially looking forward to two fun sessions we have coming up: a one-year birthday and a specialty boudoir session. Stay tuned for photos and more details about possible new offerings and specials...

Practice, Practice, Practice

I brought my camera with me to the Mill City Museum for Madeleine's one year photo shoot with Gretchen.  I felt that I had a good grasp of the three basic properties of photographs, ISO, aperture and shutter speed, but needed some real-life applications.

I always have more shots of Grace, for two reasons... 1) She sits still more and 2) She is a ham in front of the camera, as you can tell by the following photos.

Thanks for taking a peek!

Me and My Boys

It's funny to think back to the time when I was nervous to have boys. I grew up in a household that consisted of me, my sister, and my mom. I didn't know what to do with boys. Now, two years into a life with two sons, I'm so used to it being 'me and the boys'.  I adore boys and am honestly starting to wonder what I'm going to do with the little girl we have on the way....

I can't believe that Arthur and Wesley have been in this world for two whole years already. And yet, they have grown and changed so much in that time. All of a sudden, they are nearly talking in full sentences, pointing out letters by name, and know all their colors. What?!? Who are these kids and what happened to my little babies? As I am constantly reminding myself (especially on days like today when they are both sick), "The days are long, but the years are short."

To document and celebrate our two year anniversary of being a family of four, we met up with my friend and fellow photographer, Annette Pare, for some family photos at the Guthrie. She is a great photographer and a mother of small children herself. We had a blast riding the escalators, exploring the long hallways, and gazing out the big windows overlooking the river. Thanks Annette for time and for your fantastic work!

Gretchen
